Apple has officially confirmed a major leadership change that will reshape the company’s future.

Tim Cook, who has served as Apple’s CEO since 2011, will step down from his role on September 1, 2026, transitioning into the position of Executive Chairman of the board. The announcement, made late Monday, follows years of speculation about Cook’s eventual successor and highlights Apple’s long-term succession planning.

John Ternus Steps Into the Spotlight

Cook’s successor will be John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as part of the product design team and steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and Senior Vice President in 2021.

Over his 25 years at Apple, he has played a pivotal role in the development of iconic products such as the iPad, AirPods, and multiple generations of the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.

Apple’s board unanimously approved the transition, describing it as the culmination of a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.” Cook praised Ternus, saying he has “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and honor.”

What This Means for Apple

The choice of Ternus signals Apple’s continued emphasis on hardware innovation at a time when the tech industry is increasingly focused on artificial intelligence.

Analysts suggest that Apple may be doubling down on its hardware ecosystem to differentiate itself from competitors who are racing to dominate AI-driven software and services.

To fill the gap left by Ternus in hardware engineering, Apple announced that Johny Srouji, renowned for his work on Apple’s custom silicon chips, will step into the role of Chief Hardware Officer. Srouji has been instrumental in the design of Apple’s A-series and M-series processors, which power iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Cook’s Legacy

Tim Cook’s tenure as CEO began in August 2011, following the resignation of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs due to illness. Jobs passed away weeks later, leaving Cook to guide Apple through one of the most transformative periods in its history.

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple expanded into new product categories, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, and most recently, mixed reality headsets. He also oversaw Apple’s rise to become the world’s most valuable company, with a market capitalization that has consistently topped $2 trillion.

Cook will remain deeply involved in Apple’s future as Executive Chairman, focusing on board-level responsibilities and global policy engagement. Current Chairman Arthur Levinson will transition to the role of independent director.

Looking Ahead

Ternus has yet to outline his vision as CEO, but in a brief statement he promised to “lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century.” His appointment marks a generational shift in Apple’s leadership, and industry watchers will be keen to see how he balances Apple’s hardware-first strategy with the growing demand for AI and services.

This transition represents both continuity and change for Apple: continuity in its hardware excellence and change in the leadership style that will guide the company into its next era.
